Rules for Healthy Suntanning
Suntanning can also be healthy and enjoyable

When you enjoy on the beach, by the pool, on the bike and in other summer activities, you probably don’t think about the danger of sun tanning possible when not protecting. Still, it’s important to be careful while sun tanning, not only to avoid overexposure and sunburn, but also to reduce skin cancer risk. Using a sunscreen creme is so a must, but which one to choose could be quite an issue.

To help you, manufacturers of sunscreen cremes use acronym SPF (Sun Protection Factor) with appropriate number, which tells you how long is safe for you to stay under the sun. For example – SPF 15 means that you can tan for 15 times longer as without any protection. So, if you got sunburn after 10 minutes without any protection, with sunscreen applied properly you can tan for 150 minutes.

What’s the right way to apply sunscreen creme? Here are some rules, that can help you to achieve the highest level of protection. First of all, you have to apply the cream at least 30 minutes before starting sun tanning and repeatedly apply new layer of the sunscreen creme every 2 hours.

Use creme with higher SPF on your face, ears, hands and feet. Use creme even if you’re wearing clothes. Light cotton t-shirt can be less protective than SPF 15 creme. Even if using water- resistant sunscreen creme, apply it again after bathing. It isn’t that water-resistant, believe me.

Make sure the sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB rays and that you use creme within the expiration date.
If you use any other cremes with sun tanning creme, use higher SPF number because some of the cremes can affect sunscreen’s effectiveness.

If your skin type is very light (Celtic) or light (light-skinned) you should also consider about avoiding direct sun exposure between 10.00 AM and 4.00 PM, wear a larger hat and sunglasses and avoid using tanning beds.
