A new study from Israel shows just two glasses of fruit juice or soft drink a day makes a person five times more likely to develop fatty liver disease. The culprit is the fruit sugar fructose, found in many popular drinks. “Fructose increases the chances of developing a fatty liver, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer,” says lead researcher Dr. Nimer Assy, adding that diet drinks were not without risk either. For the study, cyclists were given three different drinks—glucose, glucose mixed with caffeine, or plain water – before being put through exercise.
