A swig of flat cola could pep up your performance. Sports nutritionists from Birmingham University have found that two cups of cola can improve endurance during long-distance events. For the study, cyclists were given three different drinks—glucose, glucose mixed with caffeine, or plain water – before being put through exercise. They found combining caffeine with glucose meant 26 per cent more sugar was absorbed into the body, translating into a 10-minute time gain.
