A new study from Israel shows just two glasses of fruit juice or soft drink a day makes a person five times
more likely to develop fatty liver disease. The culprit is the fruit sugar fructose, found in many popular drinks. “Fructose increases the chances of developing a fatty liver, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer,” says lead researcher Dr. Nimer Assy, adding that diet drinks were not without risk either. Although they don’t contain fructose, they contain aspartame and caramel colourants, which can increase insulin resistance and induce fatty liver, he advises.
